My name is Scarlett Freund, and I’m a portrait and street photographer based in Los Angeles, CA. Though born in NY, I grew up in São Paulo, Brazil, and that experience taught me to be at home everywhere and nowhere.
As a photographer, I am drawn to the human figure navigating the contours and stresses of modern life. Through my lens, I look for moments in which things are at a standstill and the next instant hangs in the balance, about to unfold.
What I love about street photography (in particular) is its unpredictability, its genius for storytelling, for creating connections… and how with every shot there is the potential to make the world anew.
Ultimately, I see photography as a utopian practice. I hope my images draw viewers to engage with narratives other than their own.
My work has been featured in group exhibitions in NY, CA, Venice, Milan, São Paulo, Paris, and Rome.
