Stare Downis part of my ongoing photographic series Birds of a Feather, where I explore the intersection of conversation, connection, and the quiet wonderment shared between us and our feathered friends. Birds move through our world with a rhythm and presence that often goes unnoticed—until a moment of eye contact, curiosity, or unexpected interaction reminds us that we are not simply observers, but participants in a larger dialogue.
This image captures one of those moments, where I found myself locked in a brief, almost playful confrontation with a bird whose personality felt as bold and present as any human subject I’ve photographed. There is an honesty in that exchange, a mix of curiosity, confidence, and mutual awareness captured in that moment.
Throughout Birds of a Feather, I seek to reveal these subtle yet profound interactions. Whether I’m photographing birds in flight or catching them mid-conversation in a park, my aim is to celebrate their individuality, expressive nature, and the small but meaningful connections we engage in. These connections remind me that wonder is always available if we’re willing to slow down, look closer, and meet the natural world eye-to-eye.

Roman Keith Coia, a Penn State University graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, is a West Chester, Pennsylvania based artist who has spent over 28 years navigating a career that bridges commercial image making, personal portraiture, and compelling fine art photography. His work reflects a refined blend of thoughtful composition and artistic intuition, resonating with both clients and collectors alike.
