This image The Gift 1—Bruce belongs to a book I wrote a few months ago and that I
called BRUCE. It is an organic story, a place of revealing emotions ; it rises from the
deep well of memories and the musical sound of the Soul. Thirteen chapters are
accompanied by eighteen images, all of which are woven from the depths of my heart
and eyes. BRUCE is an autobiographical story and takes place during a subtropical
summer on Spesutie Island in Maryland, where we used to live. Bruce was my first
friend. He and his mother, Margaret, were my shields against loneliness. They brought
me love and opened a wide door that led to a path I have walked on every day since
those days: The path of Black history, culture, and blues. For me, summertime echoes
with memories so deeply anchored and still so alive.
I tried to find Bruce again, but I never succeeded. His memory lives on in my words and
photographs.
