Bio.
Dennis has had a relationship with photography since his high school years, when he discovered his school’s unused darkroom. He has attended in-depth workshops at Penland School in North Carolina, Maine Media, and with individual master photographers.
Although he prefers film, he also uses digital cameras, combining digital imagery with traditional and alternative photographic processes.
He maintains a full darkroom and studio in his home in Hillsborough, NC. Dennis exhibits work as a member of the Orange County (NC) Artists Guild and teaches photography at Duke’s OLLI program.
Statement:
I use black and white photography to abstract life by stripping away the distraction of color and focusing attention on form, light, shadow, texture, and gesture. In monochrome, ordinary moments become less descriptive and more open to interpretation, allowing the familiar world to shift into something quieter, stranger, and more reflective, and enable the viewer more of an opportunity to participate.
