Bio:
Originally from Jacksonville Florida, I moved to Atlanta in 1984 where in high school I discovered my love for photography. I then went on to study at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at University ofGeorgia.
Out of college I began working as personal custom darkroom printer and photo consultant for Michael Stipe of R.E.M. for 8 years. Then in 2000 I took the leap and opened my own full-time studio, shooting commercial work and editorial work for publications all over the southeast.
Now over 25 years later I am living in Athens and splitting my time between Athens and Atlanta, shooting commercial work and my personal Black & White portrait projects.
Statement:
My current series “Of The South” is an ongoing project that explores the people, environment and unforeseen moments encountered while traveling the back roads, rivers and rural communities throughout Southern Georgia. The creation of the images are a mix of portrait sessions and spontaneous engagement with strangers, hopefully reflecting the evolving relationship with a space that is deeply familiar and passionately complex.
This South can be viewed and expressed by contrasts, a region shaped by beauty, history and pain. A place where stereotypes often obscure the richness and the humanity of the people who call it home. I believe beneath inherited narratives exists a profound connection to the land, a generosity of spirit, and a set of traditions that shape my subjects’ everyday life.
With this series I seek to move beyond simplified ideas of the South and instead create images that honor its depth and nuance. Growing up on the rivers and swamps of north Florida, I am drawn to the lush textures of the landscapes, the quality of the light and the quiet moments of intimacy that reveal a deep character and place. My hope is that the images invite viewers to experience and connect with curiosity, empathy, reflection and an appreciation for its beauty and enduring complexity
