Benita VanWinkle has taught photography in NC, GA, FL, and MT and is currently an Associate Professor of Art at High Point University in NC. For over 40 years, her passion has been recording images and personal histories of vintage movie theaters built before 1965 across the US and abroad. Benita obtained her MFA at Southern Illinois University, concentrating on architectural documentary photography and has presented her theater work internationally in Spain and Turkey, and was in Photoville, 9th annual The Fence regional exhibit. Recording over 800 theaters in 47 states, she sincerely doubts reaching all 50 will end her pursuit of the project. (And yes, she has photographs of theaters in Alaska and Hawaii!) Although traveling is great fun, Benita also makes photographs in her own backyard nearly every day, a source of never-ending wonder and mystery.
